The 121st winner of the St Leger, held on Wednesday 9th September 1896 over the Old St Leger course on Town Moor, was Persimmon, a bay colt by St Simon out of Perdita II, owned by HRH Prince of Wales. A field of 7 runners contested the race, although there were 220 subscriptions of 25 sovereigns each, which was worth 5500 sovereigns. The value to the winner was £5,075. (Equivalent to £614,100 in 2017)
